Triptych of the Crucifixion

Back

With many paintings of the crucifixion through the centuries, we question why it is that so little blood is shown on the body of Christ. Jesus is unrealistically clean with no blood except to emphasize His five wounds. Why is that?

There is a theological reason behind this choice the artist makes. The crucifixion is not Jesus’ defeat but His triumph. In such depictions of the crucifixion as this one, Jesus is shown as it were, sitting on His throne. He is the victor that conquered death.

In the gold and silver background of this triptych, angels are revealed for those who look closely. In the same way, we are invited to look closely to the mystery of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This is more than historic, scientific or informative data; this is victory, freedom and mercy.
